What is an ocular prosthesis?
An ocular prosthesis — often simply called an artificial eye — is a custom-made shell that takes the place of an eye that has been lost, or one that has become damaged and shrunken. It is shaped to fit comfortably and hand-painted to match your other eye as closely as possible.
It is important to be clear about one thing: a prosthesis restores how the eye looks, not sight. What it can do is help you look and feel like yourself again.
Who it can help
An artificial eye may be considered after the loss of an eye — for example following a serious injury, an infection, a tumour, or surgery to remove an eye — or when an eye has become permanently damaged, painful or disfigured.
Why it matters
